Conrad “Babe” Lederer of Baden has a date every 56 days. The 96-year-old Lions Club member is a regular during the Brandywine Lions’ blood drive held from 2 to 7 p.m. six times a year. “I’ve been the blood [drive] chairman for more than 30 years,” said Bill Teslik, a member of the Brandywine Lions for more than 50 years. “There has to be 56 days between donations. I have all my dates scheduled through 2012.” Lederer, who lives with his son, Bill, and daughter-in-law, Rachael, has been donating for some five decades, Rachael said. “He does it because he hopes he can save lives,” she said. “He likes the idea that he is 96 and can still give blood. He thinks it’s pretty neat.” Lederer is the oldest donor in the Greater Chesapeake and Potomac region of the American Red Cross, according to Gary Ouellete, chief executive officer of the region. Teslik, 86, is no slouch himself when it comes to giving blood. “I’ve given over 20 gallons of blood through the Red Cross,” he said. That doesn’t count the number of gallons he donated as a member of the U.S. Air Force, from which he is retired. Blood donation is an issue Teslik is passionate about. He said he has more than 150 people on his mailing list who have donated in the past year-and-a-half “Hey, you can’t manufacture blood,” he said. “In the metropolitan area, thousands of units of blood are used every day. Giving blood is very important.” The next Brandywine Lions Club blood drive will be 2 to 7 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Baden Volunteer Fire Department at 16608 Brandywine Road. Under the leadership of King Lion Paul Antonioli, along with his sons and other club members, trucks picked up 10,000 cans and boxed foods from area schools for the annual drive. The donations were sorted by product, which takes a day to sort. In the evening, volunteers spent the evening walking up and down the sorted isles in the food kitchen at the Lions Club filled boxes with an assortment of food for the 112 families who the club helped. Each family received two full boxes with a 12-pound turkey and all the fixings for Christmas dinner. Candies and cookies are added to the boxes for children. The boxes were delivered the morning of Dec. 18. The Lions would like to thank B.K. Miller Store in Clinton for providing the milk, breads, turkey and fresh vegetables to the club. With the help, the club was able to provide each of the families with a turkey dinner for the holiday and additional food for the club's pantry. About 1,400 cans of food were left over from the drive which were delivered to the Baden Food Pantry. All donated cans and boxed products were sent back to the community through the food pantry to help those in need. From the Enquirer-Gazette, Jan 17, 2008: Lions just keep on giving
Brandywine Lions Club, with the participation of area schools and B.K, Miller of Clinton, helped to give 118 food baskets to needy families in time for them to have a Christmas dinner. Each year, the Brandywine Lions organize the distribution of food baskets for the needy. The area schools provide the dry and canned goods for these baskets. According to a press release, the Dec. 21 collections from schools overflowed the tables set up to assist volunteers to fill each basket to provide a variety of food supplies for the family pantries. The donations were sorted by volunteers, then the next task was to fill the food baskets with a variety of stock collected. Gravy, cranberry sauce and even pumpkin pie filling were available to make for a Christmas celebration. Miller provided the turkeys, milk and produce (potatoes, onions, oranges, apples, margarine and celery) at cost to the Lions Club to help each needy family enjoy a true Christmas dinner, said the release. Each family received two of the baskets — one filled with a Variety of canned and dry goods and the other with the turkey and produce. The two baskets are counted as one per family, but provided all that was needed for a healthy Christmas dinner and additional meals thereafter. The Brandywine Lions Club organized and distributed the baskets Dec. 22 to the needy families. Other volunteers included the Tri-County Cruisers' Rod and Custom Car Club and others in the community.
